A family business rooted in Orkney

J & M McEwen has supplied furniture and home essentials to the people of Kirkwall and the wider Orkney Islands for generations. From our showroom on Junction Road we keep a working catalogue of beds, sofas, dining sets, cabinets, occasional pieces and the bits and pieces that make a house a home — chosen for the realities of life on the islands.

What we believe in

We sell furniture that earns its keep. That means construction you can lean on, materials that handle Orkney damp, and finishes that age gracefully. We talk plainly about lead times, about what we can deliver to Westray or to a manse in Stromness, and about what we cannot. If a piece is not right for your room, we will say so.

Where we work from

Our showroom at 76 Junction Rd, Kirkwall is open six days a week. Stock pieces are usually ready to take away the same day; bigger orders are scheduled with our own delivery team or in partnership with the Pentland Ferries / NorthLink freight service for outer-isles addresses.

A short history

The firm has carried the McEwen name since 1960, when it began life as a joinery and household furnishings supplier. Today we balance that heritage trade with a curated range of contemporary brands, ready-to-assemble pieces for student lets and rental properties, and a full bespoke route for clients who want something built to fit.

Sustainability

We take packaging back at the door, recycle every cardboard box and pallet through Orkney's waste programme, and prefer suppliers who can show FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody. We will not knowingly sell illegally-sourced timber.
